What the check looks at
The check follows the same order a leak engineer would. First it rules out emergencies and leaks on Severn Trent's side, which are theirs to fix free. Then it uses the meter, the most reliable evidence you have: with the internal stop tap closed, a meter that still moves means water is escaping on the buried supply pipe between the boundary and the house. Surface signs (damp ground, lush grass, hissing) and a letter from the water company add weight.
It can't see your pipes, so treat the result as a starting point. A leak detection visit confirms it, and the cost calculator shows what the next step is likely to cost.
